How to Prepare for your Engagement Session

A Session Captured By Rickey + Natasha: We love capturing couples year-round!

Our portrait sessions have been described as fun, creative, and candid. We feel beyond lucky that clients trust in us in capturing their most pivotal moments throughout the year.

*some locations require a photo permit for professional photography. It is the responsibility of the Client to purchase a photo permit ahead of time if needed.

Start Time: Timing is essential, so plan ahead. Depending on the time of day, lighting can change drastically and impact the look of your photos, especially during sunset hours. Give yourself time to prep the day of.  Remember to check for traffic, and have an alternate route planned. We suggest arriving 15min early, to accommodate traffic & parking. The best time to shoot is at least 1-2 hours before sunset, for golden-hour.

Your StyleConsider your style, personality, and location. Be sure that your hair, make-up, and outfits complement your theme. We do recommend professional hair & makeup for any portrait session.  Some clients will use the images for special announcements, albums, wedding decor, and large prints. Also, if you would like sitting poses we suggest bringing a blanket to sit on.

*if you are in need of a makeup referral, please let us know.

What to Wear: Dress according to the environment. If the environment is more urban, then perhaps something a little dressier will work. If the location is more rustic, perhaps a pair of stylish boots will fit the surroundings well. Don’t wear matching clothing. Think of ‘complimenting’ solid colors and not ‘matching.’ Avoid loud colors or patterns on the clothing, it might be too distracting. And no logos or slogans on clothing, either. Stylish clothing is always the way to go. Dressing in layers would be a very quick way to change the look of an outfit without doing a full outfit change. In the past, clients have started their session with a more casual look and have done a full outfit change to a more dressier style during the last portion of their session.

Real Emotions: Don’t force it. 🙂 Be confident and use your natural smile and emotions. We love posing, but even more, we enjoy the candid moments that bring photos to life – so relax, roll with the punches, and enjoy yourselves! The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will turn out.

That’s about it, happy shopping, and look forward to capturing your session! See full engagement session samples below.
